PM Narendra Modi — in a surprise national announcement at 8 p.m. — announced that ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes will not be considered legal, effective midnight.
However, there will be a new ₹500 and the government will be introducing a ₹2,000 note. The move has been made as a way to curb the rise of corruption and black money in India. All holding Indian currency will be have to exchange their notes before December 30, 2016.
